Searching for belonging: learning from students’ photographs about their higher education experiences

Searching for belonging is the transformative individual process of developing connections, making homes and hoping in ecologies a community. Belongingness influences academic performance, confidence well-being. Therefore, understanding how students embody search belongingness their higher education experience provides insights into student agency during learning development. Through an arts-based method – photography we facilitated postgraduate students’ reflections on at UK university Covid-19 pandemic. This decentres dominant role (usually English) language producing knowledge about experience. Our findings suggest that constructed through liminal space embodied, material, affective, aesthetic mental connections to new environment grounded humanistic endeavour being connected person place. The photographic are not confined by essentialist boundaries nationalities or status, which might be foregrounded existing narratives (‘international’) education. Instead, they reflect humanistic, holistic sense experience, evident as agentive, confident, capable home-making searching belonging.
